The Computational Lexical Semantics of Syntagmatic Relations

چکیده
In this paper, we address the issue of syntagmatic expressions from a computational lexical semantic perspective. From a representational viewpoint, we argue for a hybrid approach combining linguistic and conceptual paradigms, in order to account for the continuum we find in natural languages from free combining words to frozen expressions. In particular, we focus on the place of lexical and semantic restricted co-occurrences. From a t)rocessing viewpoint, we show how to generate/analyze syntagmatic expressions by using an efficient constraintbased processor, well fitted for a knowledge-driven approach. 1 I n t r o d u c t i o n You can take advantage of the chambermaid I is not a collocation one would like to generate in the context of a hotel to mean "use the services of." This is why collocations should constitute an important part in the design of Machine Translation or Multilingual Generation systems. In this paper, we address the issue of syntagmatic expressions from a computational lexical semantic perspective. From a representational viewpoint, we argue for a hybrid approach combining linguistic and conceptual paradigms, in order to account for the continuum we find in natural languages from free combining words to frozen expressions (such as in idioms kick the (proverbial) bucket). In particular, we focus on the representation of restricted semantic and lexical co-occurrences, such as heavy smoker and professor ... students respectively, that we define later. From a processing viewpoint, we show how to generate/analyze syntagmatic expressions by using an efficient constraint-based processor, well fitted for a knowledge-driven approach. In the following, we first compare different approaches to collocations. Second, we present our approach in terms of representation and processing. Finally, we show how to facilitate the acquisition of co-occurrences by using 1) the formalisnr of lexical rules (LRs), 2) an 1Lederer, R. 1990. The Semantics of the Word Istikbar (Arrogance) in the Holy Quran based on Syntagmatic Relations(A Case Study of Semantic Proximity and Semantic Contrast)
The word istikbar (arrogance) is one of the key words in the monotheistic system of the Quran, which has found a special status as a special feature of the opponents and adversaries of the call to the truth. Given the prominent role of this issue in the human life system and its provision of corruption and moral deviations, it is necessary to represent the nature of the elements that make up th...

Understanding the Quran depends upon appreciating meanings of the single words and concepts that are interconnected and interrelated like a chain. Nominal hapax legomenon in the Quran is a word that occurs only once in the holy Quran. Hence, such words need semantic scrutiny since they are difficult to understand. Accordingly, understanding hapax legomenons calls for examining and identifying t...
متن کاملCapturing Paradigmatic and Syntagmatic Lexical Relations: Towards Accurate Chinese Part-of-Speech Tagging
From the perspective of structural linguistics, we explore paradigmatic and syntagmatic lexical relations for Chinese POS tagging, an important and challenging task for Chinese language processing. Paradigmatic lexical relations are explicitly captured by word clustering on large-scale unlabeled data and are used to design new features to enhance a discriminative tagger. Syntagmatic lexical rel...
متن کاملSyntagmatic Kernels: a Word Sense Disambiguation Case Study
In this paper we present a family of kernel functions, named Syntagmatic Kernels, which can be used to model syntagmatic relations. Syntagmatic relations hold among words that are typically collocated in a sequential order, and thus they can be acquired by analyzing word sequences. In particular, Syntagmatic Kernels are defined by applying a Word Sequence Kernel to the local contexts of the wor...
